Jex Jordyn is a recording artist from New Jersey with has written and sang over some truly incredible tracks on labels such as Future House Music, NCS, and Spinnin' Records. She's worked with some of our past interviewees such as Foxa, RudeLies, Debris, and Conor Ross. Her voice is easily one of the most recognizable with its distinctly airy, almost ethereal quality and we're so excited to be able to share part of her story with you all.
Did you ever have any plans to become anything other than a musician?
Not at all. I've been dead set on music for as long as I can remember. You mentioned in your introduction video that you were picked up by a publishing company after dropping out of college. Can you talk about how that all came about and how it has set up your career so far? It was actually pretty funny, I originally dropped out of school for an entertainment company that didn't really come through the way I thought they would. Then one day I was in the gym and a guy I had graduated with asked me to come to his studio and record. His dad, who was the owner of the company, heard me and the rest is history.
How did you first get involved on the EDM scene?
Honestly it's all kind of a blur, but I believe the first person to ever reach out to me was a producer named Lastep. I kind of blew him off in the beginning, but eventually I got on his track. He is such an awesome guy and a pleasure to work with, and I'm so happy he was persistent with me. These guys LU2VYK also reached out after they came across a cover I put out, I ended up recording on their track and everything just kind of blew up from there. To all of the producers out there looking for a vocalist, what are some of your dos and don'ts when it comes to asking for a collaboration? Sometimes my manager or I have to tell producers I don't have time because I already have a priority list set and ready to go. In the past, I would take on way too many projects and not be able to keep promises I would make to producers. Too many projects puts a stupid amount of stress on me. So when I tell producers I can't work on their track, most take it well and are understanding about it all. However, I did have one producer that completely went off on me for politely refusing and well, let's just say I will never be working with him in the future.
More and more we're seeing articles and stories about the importance of having the rights to your own tracks. What issues have you run into with labels and companies while trying to release your songs or publishing your incredible cover videos?
I'm still learning about this every day. Haven't ran into any serious issues persay, but it's definitely something every artist should be mindful of!
You've amassed quite the discography over the past few years, what have been some of your standout moments and proudest accomplishments so far?
I honestly feel like I've barely scratched the surface of what I wanna do. I don't like to pat myself on the back too often, but I am happy with the numbers I've gotten on the NCS releases. I think a really cool moment was when I saw my lyrics in someone's Instagram bio. It's just mind blowing to think something I write to relieve some stress, all alone in my lil' studio, is now impacting someone else across the world. What should we be expecting from Jex in 2019 and beyond? I'm gonna keep that a secret for now!
