This survey was conducted back in 2019 with a survey pool of 256 unique respondents. A Google Form was used to collect the data and aggregate it into the article you see below. I did a survey back in 2019 to learn more about how fans were finding new EDM tracks and found that only 6 people out of 256 respondents said they found new music on blogs. When asked about the usefulness of blogs, 86 people said they thought blogs were "not at all useful" for seeking out new tracks to save. If you look at the engagement rate of some of the top EDM blogs, you'll find that many of them are under 1%, which is a third of what the average is for larger profiles. Some of them have fallen off so hard that they can't even muster 100 likes on Instagram. (In contrast to this, I would say that EDMHouseNetwork is probably doing the best job in generating discussions with their posts about news and nostalgic tracks and EDM Reviewer always knows how to bring some spicy takes to the table)
As I've looked more into how Spotify picks tracks for Editorials and perhaps even algorithmic playlists, they look at blogs to check the external press for the song and the overall "buzz" around it. So it's clear that blogs are valued to them, but to the average listener, not so much. Anecdotally, my disappointment with EDM blogs is the reason I started QR in the first place. There's an excellent article on EDM Reviewer about how many larger blogs recycle PR texts for their "articles" which would feed into the idea that the best way to get on those sites is through a PR company. Which is to say that there isn't quite the passion up there at the top, at least none that inspires fans of the genre to get engaged and read their site like one would read the news. The last thing I'll say is that it's actually not that hard to start a blog. I didn't have any web experience or SEO knowledge or even industry connections when I started QR. I just knew what I wanted to see more of and started interviewing people I found interesting. I'll be trying to do more interviews as time allows, but I encourage any prospective writers or blog owners out there to message me if they want to try and change up this side of the industry to shake things up and breathe new life into it.
